Since 1995, Assembling Dependable Engineering, Design, & Manufacturing Relationships

Measling in PCBs

Measling occurs when discrete white spots appear in the base epoxy-glass laminate of a PCB (printed circuit board), usually when the resin is not properly applied to the board during the lamination process due to the presence of moisture or other contaminants. Measling signifies a malfunctioning or poor-quality board that can degrade electrical and physical performance.

A sound production process can prevent measlingupfront, however it is possible for it to occur over the life of the PCB due to mechanical stress.

  • 1.Ensure a well-managed manufacturing process run by a seasoned CM
  • 2.Maintain proper temperature and resin control during lamination
  • 3.Make sure surface finishes are of good quality and PCBs are properly stored in a dry cabinet
  • 4.Maintain proper board temperature before thermal processing

How do you evaluate measling defects? Expose the laminate to moisture prior to immersion in solder paste at 500 degrees Fahrenheit. If the laminate passes this test, then it will normally go through the etching and soldering process without measling.
